If you’ve ever felt called to do, build, or create something new or different, *but felt resistance*, this is for you.

A lot of us resist.

We resist because we’re afraid.

Acting on this endeavor would require leaving the known for the unknown.

There are thresholds we need to cross to move through this resistance — to move from the known to the unknown. Recognizing the thresholds keeping us from creating what we truly want is the first step.

Robert Ellis introduced me to these thresholds and they always surface in my coaching conversations with clients:

  • The silliness threshold: the fear of looking bad.
  • The knowledge threshold: the fear that we don’t know enough.
  • The trust threshold: the fear that if we answer the call, we might get hurt.
  • The sanity threshold: the fear of being overwhelmed and losing control.
  • The love threshold: the fear that we’ll discover some awful fundamental truth about ourselves — the fear of being unlovable.

I’ve grappled with all of these thresholds in my life and I’ve seen my clients grapple with all of them too at different points.

If you’re feeling called to do something new or different but are facing resistance, see if you can identify which of these thresholds are at the crux of your hesitation.
